Canopy: Tree Tab Manager & Session Saver ("Canopy") is a browser extension that shows your open tabs as a tree, saves sessions, and keeps automatic backups. This policy says exactly what it does with your data. The short version: your data stays on your device.

What Canopy stores

To do its job, Canopy stores the following in your browser's local database (IndexedDB) and extension storage, on your device:

  • The titles, URLs and site icons of your open tabs, and the tree structure (which tab was opened from which, window grouping, order).
  • Tabs and windows you have closed, which stay in the tree as "saved" until you delete them.
  • Sessions you save, including names you choose.
  • Automatic and manual backups of the above.
  • Your settings (theme, backup frequency, whether to keep closed tabs).
  • If you buy Canopy Pro, your license key and the time it was last verified.

What Canopy does not do

  • It does not send your tabs, sessions, backups or settings anywhere. Canopy has no server.
  • It has no analytics, no telemetry, no crash reporting and no advertising.
  • It does not read the content of web pages. It requests no host permissions.
  • It does not sell, share or transfer your data to anyone.
  • It does not require an account.

Site icons are shown using the browser's own favicon cache, which does not involve a request from Canopy.

Canopy Pro purchases and license checks

Canopy is free. Canopy Pro is an optional one-time purchase sold through Lemon Squeezy, which acts as the merchant of record. Lemon Squeezy processes your payment and collects the details it needs for that (such as your email address and payment details) under its own privacy policy. We do not receive or store your card details. We may see your email address and order details in order to provide support and handle billing issues.

When you enter a license key, Canopy sends that key (and a name for your browser instance, so the 3-browser limit can be enforced) to Lemon Squeezy's license service to activate and, from time to time, re-check it. Nothing about your tabs, sessions or browsing is included. If Canopy cannot reach the service, Pro keeps working for a 30-day offline grace period. This is the only network request Canopy makes, and it happens only if you use a Pro license key.

Why Canopy asks for permissions

See the extension's store listing for a one-line reason for each permission (tabs, storage, unlimitedStorage, sidePanel, alarms, favicon). In short: reading tab titles and URLs to draw the tree, storing data locally, showing the side panel, and scheduling backups.

Export, import and backups

  • Backups are created automatically on a schedule and before every import and restore. They are stored in the same local database on your device.
  • Export saves a JSON file of your tree and sessions to a location you choose, from the side panel. Canopy does not upload it. Once you have the file, what happens to it is up to you; it contains your tab titles and URLs, so treat it accordingly.
  • Import reads text or a file you provide (OneTab, Session Buddy, Tabs Outliner or a Canopy export). It is processed entirely on your device.

Deleting your data

  • Delete a tab, session or backup in Canopy and it is removed from the local database.
  • Uninstalling the extension removes all of its stored data from your browser.
  • Clearing the extension's site data in your browser settings also removes it.
  • Exported files are separate copies on your disk; delete them yourself.

Because Canopy keeps your tab data on no server, there is no copy of it that we could access or delete for you. For purchase records held by Lemon Squeezy, contact us or Lemon Squeezy.

Future changes

If a future version changes any of the above (for example an optional Google Drive backup sync), this policy will be updated first and the change will be described in the extension's release notes. Any such feature will be opt-in.
